Bundesliga: Niclas Fullkrug, Donyell Malen Borussia Dortmund strikes as they easily defeat Freiburg

In the Bundesliga on Friday, Borussia Dortmund defeated Freiburg 3-0 at home thanks to goals from Donyell Malen in the first and second halves.

Celebrating his 31st birthday, striker Niclas Fuellkrug set up both of the goals for the Netherlands winger before tying the score in the last moments.

Dortmund now sits four points ahead of RB Leipzig in fifth position after the victory. The Saxons will play at Augsburg on Saturday.

Malen has now scored four goals in his previous four games after being linked to a move away from Dortmund during the winter transfer window.

Malen said to DAZN, “We had the right intensity from the start and scored at the right moments.” We’ve come a long way since (the) winter break.

Dortmund has improved their chances of qualifying for the Champions League with 13 points from five league games.

Fuellkrug said to DAZN, “I wished for a win for my birthday—and maybe a bit of birthday cake as well.”

Along with Englishman Jadon Sancho, who began on the bench, coach Edin Terzic may be able to draw upon the skills of numerous returning first-team players, including Marco Reus, Julian Brandt, and Julian Ryerson.

Fuellkrug set up Malen in the sixteenth minute when he held up the ball with his back to goal and found the Dutchman. The Dutchman whirled on the spot and sent a rocket into the roof of the net.

Dortmund’s second goal was once again created by Fuellkrug, who held up the ball during a counterattack before laying it off to Malen, who fired a shot that sailed across the goal and in.

Deep into first-half injury time, the goal was scored. Due to spectators tossing tennis balls onto the field as part of league-wide demonstrations against foreign involvement in German football, the game was delayed by 12 minutes.

Fuellkrug said, “I can understand the fans; it’s their stage and they want to use it to make themselves heard.”

“But from a sporting standpoint, it’s not so great—it’s not like it’s 25 degrees right now—when you have to keep warm and are constantly interrupted.”

With three minutes left in the match, Fuellkrug headed in a cross from Ian Maatsen, a Chelsea loanee, to score his own goal late in the contest.

With time running out, Sancho, who was sidelined by a muscular injury during the draw with Heidenheim the previous week, had two opportunities to score but missed both.

Malen has already matched his season-ending tally of nine goals in the Bundesliga this season.

Freiburg, now ranked seventh in Dortmund, suffered another setback.

They have lost 15 of their last 16 games at the Westfalenstadion and drawn one, meaning they have not triumphed there since 2001.

If third-place Stuttgart defeats struggling Mainz on Sunday, they can close the gap with Dortmund to three points.

League leaders Bayer Leverkusen will play second-place Bayern Munich on Saturday.

After 30 games in all competitions this year, Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen are still undefeated and two points ahead of Bayern.
